In this Japanese orchard, a woman ties a bright blue bag around each Mutzu apple to produce higher quality fruit. "A bagged apple tree looks like it has an odd flock of birds on it waiting to take flight," says UC photography professor Jane Stevens, who spent months documenting the labor-intensive work through photos. Stevens has found no other artist who had ever captured the waning Japanese tradition, and the city where she stayed offered her an exhibition of her work, which is still being planned.
