The first open space implemented under the Master Plan, located behind McMicken Hall, completed: summer '90. Demolition of Old Tech created the space for the commons, and a gift from Marjorie Hiatt funded a plaza.
Constantly used for studying, socializing, campus events and even conducting outdoor classes, the commons will expand toward the Baldwin Quad in the future when Campus Drive closes. Closing the drive will eliminate the current break in the "Arc of Knowledge," which is the walkway and low stone wall that curves along the commons' exterior.
It will also expand toward the south when Tanners Hall is removed and TUC is reconstructed. A plaza in front of TUC will also be developed to include a stage, tables and chairs.
