Attached to the south side of Swift Hall, the proposed Braid Building will contain street-level activities intended to draw students and keep campus energized beyond typical office hours. A 24-hour coffee shop, a 100-seat computer lab and a sandwich shop will occupy part of the building's 68,000 square feet, which will more than double the current space for student organizations and activities.
The building is also intended to anchor the campus Main Street concept, approved by the UC Board of Trustees in '98 following research indicating students wanted a mix of activities that provided a sense of community at all hours. The building will also house the offices of student life, campus wellness, professional practice, global studies and the News Record.
