The 65-foot tower has seats in its granite base and a light emitting from the torch that can change color. In creating the monument for its 100th anniversary, the honorary fraternity Sigma Sigma incorporated a great deal of symbolism into the structure. The base forms the letters U and C. The center forms hammers, which when combined with the torch at the top, illustrate the fraternity motto: "The torch burns. The hammers ring." Atop the hammers are depictions of the Greek letter sigma.
