Once the center of campus life, TUC lost that prominence as student services became scattered. A massive renovation is intended to draw students back with a 700-seat food court, a 250-seat theater, a high-tech game lounge with access to Nippert Stadium, a relocated bookstore, an art gallery, student lounges and multiple conference and meeting rooms.

The first substantial renovation since the 1960s, the project will add approximately 40,000 square feet of space, construct a new south wing, maintain the historic facade facing McMicken and preserve the clock tower atop a clear, glass-like roof that will crown a 90-foot-high atrium. No date has been set for completion yet.

"TUC will literally be gutted, and the facility will be opened up, like what you see when you walk into a modern mall," says Mitchel Livingston, UC's vice president for Student Affairs and Human Resources. "There will be descending and ascending escalators, which allows all floors of the building to be open, and we intend to bring more commercial activity into the facility, as well."
