World view from the Cincinnati Observatory

Photograph by Bob Flischel

Founded in 1842 and moved to this location in 1873, the Cincinnati Observatory is the country's oldest professional observatory. Owned by the University of Cincinnati, the fully functional 19th century facility is located a little more than 5 miles away from campus, in the Hyde Park/Mount Lookout area. Because photographer Bob Flischel had fond memories of spending much time on the grounds of this National Historic Landmark, he made sure his new book included this image, which he shot in the early morning. A not-for-profit organization operates the observatory building and handles restoration in partnership with UC.
