Nippert Stadium

9-06

The north end of Nippert Stadium now has stadium seating topped by a pedestrian bridge and a new scoreboard, all added when the adjacent Campus Recreation Center was constructed and opened in the spring of 2006. The pedestrian bridge serves as a campus shortcut through the stadium.

"For a long time, Nippert has served to block the natural lines of east-west traffic on campus," says Dale Beeler, senior architect with local firm KZF Design. "All the pathways that naturally led toward and past Nippert had to stop and dogleg around the facility. It was a 24/7 impediment to cross traffic. Not anymore."

In addition, a new FieldTurf playing surface was installed with the new Big East conference logo. And interesting views of the field have been created with the construction of Stadium View Cafe in the Campus Rec Center and a glassed-in study area in TUC.

In 2000, a three-story press box was remodeled and renamed in honor of John Hermanies, JD '48, a longtime supporter of the UC sports program, a former member of the UC Board of Trustees and a contributor of $1.5 million to Varsity Village.
