Out of 149 total photos that featured identifiable people

  • ethnicity -- minorities were represented in 43% of the photos, including all three cover shots and the two back-cover ads that featured people
  • gender disparity -- women were in 59% of the photos, men in 84%
  • persons with disabilities -- two of the three issues featured photographic coverage

Specific content in print and online
Six categories of diversity were specifically highlighted in news content.
• socio-economic status -- 14 stories focused on UC's involvement in the following:

  • Habitat for Humanity
  • the Ohio Innocence Project
  • Community Design Center, offering help for urban neighborhoods
  • Serve Beyond Cincinnati team working in Third World countries
  • mentoring homeless youth
  • a fundraiser for a "just community"
  • Legal Aid Society (law students helping victims pro bono through the domestic violence clinic)
  • offering scholarships to any Cincinnati student in financial need
  • preparing at-risk students for college
  • free medical services to help senior citizens live independently longer
  • UC athletes working with underprivileged youth
  • Cincinnati Initiate to Reduce Violence

  • the Latino Health Collaborative

• nationality differences -- 5 stories focused on the following:

  • UC researcher documenting how apples are raised in Japan
  • UC researcher studying climate change in Antarctica
  • UC researcher studying coral reefs
  • UC students participating in a U.N. event
  • UC students studying abroad in larger numbers than rest of the country

• persons with disabilities -- 3 stories focused on the following:

  • UC athletes helping with Special Olympics
  • eating disorders

• religious/cultural backgrounds -- 1 story focused on the following:

  • UC study exploring the attitudes of clergy from 150 religious organizations toward HIV/AIDS patients

• age differences

  • Every issue included news from alumni from every decade, starting with the '20s or '30s to the present.

Every issue of the magazine contains photos and copy reflecting four categories: 1) alumni,
2) faculty, 3) students, 4) a historic view of UC

  • Web exclusives page -- 41% of Web exclusive content posted during the year reflected racial diversity.
  • Breaking News -- 50% of breaking news items posted since January reflected racial diversity among photos or individuals named in stories.
  • video archive page -- 75% of videos from the last academic year reflect racial diversity.
  • home page photos -- 50% of the main photos that rotate on the home page since the new Web site went live in April 2008 showed racial/ethnic diversity.
  • religious/cultural backgrounds -- The UC Authors section reflected diversity of religious, racial, cultural and age-related backgrounds through reviews on books that dealt with the following:
    • Ghana
    • Vietnam
    • "Jews in Cincinnati"
    • a fictional account of racial injustice
    • American Indians
    • British culture
    • exploitation of the elderly
